In 1959, NASA asked the U.S. Military to list their members who met specific qualifications as pilots for the manned spaceflight program. This only included white men. But for more than 20 years after NASA launched the first rocket with an astronaut aboard back in 1961, men and women of all races are flying high above the Earth.
